The word Sacristan comes from the Latin word, sacer, which means sacred. With great reverence for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, the Sacristan, under the general direction of the Clergy, undertakes the overall preparation of liturgical celebrations and takes care of the Sacristy and the sacred items therein.
Requirements of a Sacristan are organizational skills, so that the Mass runs smoothly; people skills for dealing with various ministers involved with the Mass; and a good working relationship with the Clergy. It is also important to be versed in scripture, the flow of the Mass, and the intricacies of the liturgical calendar.
