The Little Company of Mary Associates are co-workers in the sisters' ministry by uniting the Sisters in praying for the sick and dying and assisting in the apostolic work within the Parish. Their goal is to share in the knowledge and appreciation of the Little Company of Mary Charism as handed down from the Foundress, Venerable Mary Potter as well as, to be personally enriched spiritually and intellectually through spiritual reading, shared prayer, attendance at the Eucharist and socializing in the Christian community of people who are striving for the same goals of living the Gospel message and deepening their relationship with the Lord.
In 1983, Fr. Sporrer recognized the need for a ministry at St. Nicholas that would focus specifically on the elderly, sick, dying and shut-in parishioners, a Pastoral Visitation Program for the Sick and Homebound. To that end, he contacted the Little Company of Mary Sisters who had been recommended by a visiting priest from England.
The Little Company of Mary was founded in England and had spread to the United States with the Province Office in Evergreen Park, IL. At that time, the Sister’s apostolate ministry was working in hospitals and health care facilities. However, the Order became willing to extend their ministry to serve the needs of the elderly, the first to do so in their American Province. Bishop William Johnson of the Orange Diocese formally invited the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary to work at St. Nicholas Parish.
The Associates hold monthly gatherings. They have donated money to help support South County OutReach at Thanksgiving, Adopt-A-Platoon and Heifer International at Christmas and the LCM Nursing Education Fund at the Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance in January 2015.
Currently there are 39 Associates and a new class will be held this year. The class travels “The Stages of the Journey”, and upon completion the new candidates also make a commitment at a special Eucharistic Liturgy and receive the LCM Associate Emblem. From there they will join the other Associates and the Little Company of Mary in following the charism of Venerable Mary Potter.
