How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He
went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God
was with him. Acts 10:38
James said in his epistle," “Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven”. Jas. 5:14–15
The Catholic sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, formerly known as Last Rites or Extreme Unction, is a ritual of healing appropriate not only for physical but also for mental and spiritual sickness. It is a rite that is performed through the power of the Holy Spirit. Through the anointing of the sick, there is a special grace received providing strength, peace and courage to endure the sickness. It is also conducive to the salvation of the soul and preparations for passing over to the new life.
In the event of a serious illness, an upcoming surgery, a change of condition for one who is elderly or infirmed, or of a medical emergency, the Parish Office should be contacted immediately so that the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick may be celebrated.
A communal celebration of this Sacrament is celebrated in the Fall and Spring as announced.
